Our facilities
The traditional settlement of Mochlos is one of the few picturesque fish villages of East Crete. It is located at the north coastline of Crete, 30kms east of Agios Nikolaos, which is the capital of the county, and 35kms from Sitia. The small island just opposite the village Agios Nikolaos, which was named after the small white chapel on the island, has been an integral part of Mochlos since the Minoan era.
Mochlos was renowned as one of the most important centres of the Minoan Civilization. The great historical importance of this island is proved by the continuous excavations and the amazing findings which date back to the 18th century BC. Gold jewels, clay pots, stone vessels all of which are masterpieces. Nowadays, the American School of Classical Studies In collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Culture preserves this archaeological site. At the archaeological museums of Iraklio, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia we are able to admire these findings which are of outstanding beauty and great importance.
These days, Mochlos is a quiet small village with a scenic small port with crystal clear waters. The reception by the inhabitants is warm and always accompanied with a carafe of raki!
Mochlos visitors can enjoy all the spectrum of the Cretan cuisine. All taverns in Mochlos guarantee fresh fish and tasty traditional dishes containing pure olive oil. In order to entertain yourselves you can have a drink or coffee at “Pool Bar-Blue Sea” and “Grand Bleu” café-bars. At the minimarket of the village you will find anything you might be in need of during your stay.
Every season of the year is special in this Cretan fish village as visitors have the chance to experience moments of a lifetime.
The gulfs around Mochlos are suitable for diving, fishing, water sports and even swimming at a beach with pebbles and sand. The surrounding area offers itself to hiking and biking fans who will discover the grandeur of nature, magnificent paths, herbs and plants of the Cretan land, archaeological findings, gorges and scenery of unique beauty, even chapels at the most remote spots.
The traditional Villa Vaya hostel is also at Mochlos, at the slope of a hill 100m away from the village and 50m from the Blue Sea rooms.
It has a two-bed room with air-condition, a bathroom, a kitchen and a triple room with a bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a living room with satellite tv.
In the living room there is a fireplace around which you can sit and enjoy the outstanding view of the small island opposite Mochlos. The spacious exterior spaces will reward you as the view is unique and you are also able to use the barbeque. Swimming pool and private parking lot is also available.
